The Many Shades of Diwali Across India

Diwali Across India | Livin Interiors

Diwali, the Festival of Lights, is one of India’s most cherished celebrations. It’s not just a single festival it’s a reflection of how deeply India’s cultural diversity shines through shared traditions. Every region, every home, and every community adds its own warmth and flavor to the celebration.

North India: Homecoming of Lord Ram

In most northern states, Diwali marks the return of Lord Ram to Ayodhya after 14 years of exile. Homes are lit with rows of diyas, symbolizing the triumph of light over darkness. Families clean and decorate their houses, exchange sweets, and perform Lakshmi Puja to invite prosperity. The sky glows with fireworks, and markets come alive with colors, lights, and the scent of marigolds.

Western India: The Festival of Prosperity

In Gujarat and Maharashtra, Diwali is closely linked to business and prosperity. For many traders, it marks the end of the financial year, and new account books are opened on this day. People worship Goddess Lakshmi and Lord Ganesha for wealth and good fortune. Rangolis made from colored powders decorate entrances, and homes sparkle with oil lamps and fairy lights.

Eastern India: Worship of Goddess Kali

In Bengal, Odisha, and Assam, Diwali coincides with Kali Puja, the worship of Goddess Kali, the fierce form of Shakti. Homes and temples are illuminated with diyas, and the air carries the fragrance of incense and flowers. The night is filled with chants and the deep rhythm of dhak (drums), reflecting both devotion and strength.

Southern India: Victory of Lord Krishna

In Tamil Nadu, Karnataka, and Andhra Pradesh, Diwali has its own story celebrating Lord Krishna’s victory over the demon Narakasura. The day starts with an early oil bath, new clothes, and bursting of crackers. In Kerala, Diwali is more subdued but filled with prayers, sweets, and the lighting of lamps to honor the spirit of the festival.

Modern Homes, Timeless Traditions

Across cities and towns, Diwali has also become a time to rediscover the meaning of home. People renovate, repaint, or redecorate their spaces adding new lights, furnishings, and accents that reflect joy and positivity. From minimalist designs to traditional touches, every corner of the house tells a story of renewal.

At Livin Interiors, we believe your home should mirror this spirit of light and togetherness. Whether it’s through thoughtful design, vibrant colors, or warm lighting, Diwali reminds us that beauty begins right where we live.
