Masking in Interiors: What it is, how it’s done and why it matters
Masking in Interiors | Livin Interiors
• Hob to chimney 650-750 mm (per model spec)
• Switchboard 1050-1200 mm; socket over counter 1050 mm
• TV centerline in living 1050-1200 mm (seated viewing); keep 300-450 mm below for soundbar if any
• Dining pendant 700-850 mm above tabletop
• Wardrobe hanging rail 1500-1600 mm (adult long hang), 1100-1200 mm (shirts/child)
• Bedside wall light 1200-1350 mm (so the bulb sits above eye level when seated)
• Vanity counter 820-900 mm; mirror top around 1800-1950 mm
• Clear walkway 900 mm minimum; island clearance in kitchens 900-1050 mm
On interior sites, masking tape isn’t only for protecting finishes. It’s also a quick, life-size markup tool that shows what goes where before anything is drilled or fixed.
Masking-as-markup
Teams use tape to outline the footprint and height of furniture, cabinets, mirrors, appliances, switchboards, lights and sanitaryware. Seeing the full-scale outline on the wall or floor lets everyone confirm location, spacing and clearance in minutes. It prevents clashes with door swings, windows, beams and existing wiring, and it gives clients a clear visual for sign-off.How crews do it on site
They snap a centerline, measure from fixed references (finished floor level, windowsill, countertop), then tape the outline and write labels right on the tape- TV 1500 mm CL, switchboard 1200 mm AFF, vanity 900 mm HT, etc. Clearances are taped too (for example, 900 mm walkway), and doors/drawers are mocked open with extra strips to check swing. Once approved, the team photographs the taped layout with a measuring tape in frame and converts it to final shop drawings.Quick height and spacing cues most teams mark with tape

Why this step matters
Taping layouts costs little but saves rework, keeps holes and conduits exactly where they belong, and makes installation faster because the site team is following a full-scale map, not just a drawing. It also helps you (and your family) feel the room before it’s built. If something feels tight, you’ll know now, not after the screws go in.
If you want, we can share a simple “masking checklist” tailored to your rooms so your contractor marks every critical height and clearance before installation begins.
At Livin Interiors, we help you plan spaces that blend beauty with practicality. Whether you want an open, closed, or hybrid kitchen layout, our team is ready to bring your vision to life. Let’s make your kitchen the heart of your home, no matter the walls.
